Last month we touched on the subject of covenant relationships. In this month’s blog I want to examine the core value of the universal church and how I believe it should be in synergy with “covenant relationships”. I believe what Jesus said in His word. Mathew 16:7 tells us that God is building His church AND that He is doing it in a very unique way.
- God builds His church through the manner in which He ordains. Ephesians 2:20 declares that God builds it on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Jesus being the chief cornerstone. This is very important. You see, every building that has the word “church” in its name does not automatically mean it’s a church that Jesus is building. God does not have an obligation to build that which He has not ordained.
Each of us has our own individual destiny, calling and assignment - but we must understand they are all part of a much larger narrative; the building of God’s Church. I happen to be a part of a local church community even though I travel nearly 200 days a year in ministry. As I minister in these other churches I must not go in with the mindset of “How can I expand my own ministry” but rather with the prayer “How can I most effectively build this local church that God has called me to stand with in this moment.” I think that every person has a unique local community that God has called him or her to be a part of. I also love the different streams and strengths that each church offers. Some churches meet in coffee houses, some in homes, some in large buildings and some in small ones – each with their own distinct flavor. God loves variety!
I encourage you to find a place where you can connect and become an active member of a church. The primary mission of God’s church is to equip people to walk in passionate relationship with Him and to fulfill the cultural commission of Genesis 1 (and reaffirmed in Matthew 28) that God is building His church on the Earth. I value the church because His desire is for us is to transform the world and make it look like heaven.
